Reading Futures PnL

Futures PnL is direction, price difference, contract count and multiplier. A long profits when the exit is above entry; a short profits when it is below. The multiplier is what turns a small point move into real money — a 60-point move on two contracts at 50 per point is $6,000.

Return on margin is the number that actually matters for comparison across trades. The same $6,000 on $5,000 posted is a 120% return; on $50,000 posted it is 12%. Reporting PnL without margin hides leverage, which is how performance looks better than it is.

This figure excludes commissions, exchange fees and funding. In high-frequency scalping those costs are frequently larger than the edge itself, so subtract them before deciding a strategy works.
